Northern Food Night 2007

The 2nd annual Northern Food Night is slated for March 31st again at the home of Steven Cooper and Twyla Campbell. The event, with room for 35 guests, is already sold out due to the success of last year’s debut. Ideas for a bigger venue are being considered for 2008.

This event showcases foods from suppliers in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The goal of this event is to make people aware of foods available from northern suppliers as well as letting people have a taste of some truly unique products. This year we will be sampling musk ox, caribou, freshwater fish including arctic char and salmon. Along with Steve and Twyla, some local chefs who are members of Edmonton’s Slow Food convivium will be preparing the dishes so we are sure to have some wonderful creations to sample!

For information on northern products you can contact Steve Cooper at [email protected] or 464-7477. Suppliers contact information along with a recap of the event will be posted here after March 31st. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Local versus Organic

The “What to Eat for Dinner?” discussion seems to be going ever more mainstream these days. Check out Time magazine’s cover story “Eating Better than Organic”. I particularly was interested in the fact that Google, yes Google, has taken on the cause. It’s Cafe 150 food service outlets, ie. restaurants and cafeterias, serve only food originating within a 150-mile radius of its Mountain View, CA, “campus”. And these restaurants are free for the Google employees.

Maybe we should get Intuit or Dell, both with big headquarters here in Edmonton, to do something similar??
